Members who become disabled while a member of TCERA may be eligible for a disability retirement benefit. Disability benefits require a separate application and approval process and are subject to a determination by the Board of Retirement that the member is permanently incapacitated from the employee’s current job duties with the employer. If the Board of Retirement determines that the disability is service connected, the benefit may be increased and may provide tax advantages.
